Beach in Kovalam |
Kovalam ( Malayalam : കോവളം , Kōvaḷam [ ˈkoːʋəɭʌm ]) is a beach town in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala . It is located on the coast of the Arabian Sea 13 kilometers south of Thiruvananthapuram , the capital of Kerala, and belongs to the Thiruvananthapuram district
Kovalam is the main beach town of Kerala and a popular travel destination for both western tourists and wealthy Indians. The sandy beach of Kovalam stretches over a length of around two kilometers in an arc and is separated into two sections by a rock formation protruding into the sea, Lighthouse Beach and Hawah Beach . To the north and south there are other smaller beaches a little further away. In the hinterland of the beaches there are extensive coconut groves . The Lighthouse Beach takes its name from a lighthouse that is visible from afar on a rock above the beach. There is a car-free tourist promenade at Lighthouse Beach, which is where most of the hotels and restaurants have concentrated.
Kovalam was originally a small fishing village and was then discovered by European backpackers . Since the mid-1990s, Kovalam has also become a destination for package tourists . In addition to the beach vacation, it is also the numerous Ayurvedic wellness and treatment offers that attract Western tourists.
