Kowalit the brand name of the "was VEB Kombinat rubber Thuringia " in Waltershausen produced tubular tire . The name was an abbreviation for Ko mbinat Wal tershausen i n T hüringen. Since the GDR did not have its own bicycle tire production until 1952, the tires required for cycling had to be procured from abroad in foreign currency. A tubular tire developed within a few years was first used successfully in 1956 in the peace drive. In 1958 the Kowalit was used by both the GDR national team and Täve Schur to win the World Cup. Later it was also exported abroad (USSR, Poland, Romania, People's Republic of China, Korea, Yugoslavia, Sweden, Finland). West German cyclists also liked to use the Kowalit as a training tire because of its low price. The Kowalit was offered in versions for road training tires, road criterion tires, road touring tires, cross-country knobby tires, track tires as well as bike ball and cycling. It was also used as a normal bicycle tire.
