IF boats in a regatta

The IF-Boot is a sailing yacht made of GRP . The design dates from 1966 by Tord Sundén, who was involved in the design of the Nordic Folkboat as early as 1942 . The IF boat was originally called “International Folk Boat”, but was not allowed to keep this name because it was not registered as an international class, but only as a Swedish and later also a Danish national class.

The IF boat is based on the rift of the Nordic Folk boat. Compared to this, it got a higher freeboard , and the transom and stern were slightly changed. The superstructures were extended to the mast in order to get more space below deck. Because a GRP hull is lighter than the wooden hull of the Nordic Folkboat, the keel weight and thus the sail area could be increased. The sails load rating is 3.95. To improve sea safety, the boat was equipped with a self-draining cockpit. A locker is located aft of the cockpit on the IF boat. The engine shaft for the outboard engine is also located there on many ships . The rig consists of a flexible metal mast, which allows a variable trim . The boat also has a genoa and spinnaker .

It is estimated that by October 1987 about 3,600 boats had been built, 100 of which were under license in Australia. New IF boats have been built since 2018. The sailing numbers of the new IF boats start with 5001. A new IF boat cost 23,100 DM from the shipyard in 1968 (inflation-adjusted today 43,894 euros) and in 2018 around 44,800 euros. Depending on the equipment, the IF boat has the CE seaworthiness rating B or C.
