Toad

Toad was a measure of salt in Bavaria and was one of the very old measures. The name was closely linked to the type of packaging and the type of brew . There was slice, toad, hem and tarpaulin salt and these formed the basis for customs clearance . Krötel was the basket or the salt barrel.

  • 1 Krötel = 3 slices, later 3 ½ then 4 slices.

The salt in the wooden salt vats was called slices .

  • 1 toad = 9 fuders = 7 ½ meatballs = 277.5 pounds
  • 1 load of salt = 4 galvai ; later Unsäld = wagon load = 14 Galvai = 28 Metzen

A larger unit was 1 Gut Krötel with 34 Krötel.
