The word crawling group is used with different meanings.

As a toddler groups are toddler groups designated to be visited jointly by children and parents. Family- oriented children's and youth recreational facilities , town houses , parishes or medical facilities offer such offers, some with special conceptual focuses (exercise, singing, etc.). So- called PEKiP groups have become well known. Mainly, they should offer the children development-promoting offers. In addition, they also serve to promote social contacts between children and parents and give parents suggestions for how they should deal with the children.

On the other are called toddlers group also Krabbelstube , institutions for child day care with children aged one to three years referred to by educators are conducted. The parents are only present here during the acclimatization phase (see early childhood education ). These groups are often affiliated with other child day care facilities (such as kindergartens ).

Sometimes the term crawling group is also used to differentiate itself from the term crèche , which is sometimes perceived as negative .

While the prevailing view in West Germany was that small children belong to the mother and that group care by educators is harmful to child development, other views are increasingly gaining ground. Supported by international experience and in the course of German reunification, but also by research results (in Germany for example L. Ahnert), the opinion today is that the positive as well as the negative aspects of small child group care depend on the quality of the care offered. The range of places for children under three is now being expanded. This is intended to improve the compatibility of family and work . On the other hand, positive effects on the fertility rate and the improvement of educational opportunities for the children are expected (see Early Education ).
