A power side cutter is a side cutter for cutting high-strength wires (spring steel wires ) or steel strips. This term arose from the trade in side cutters that were designed for this purpose. The pivot joint between the two crossing pliers levers was designed so that the clippings can be brought closer to the pivot point, so that the cutting force is greater due to the shorter lever arm at the interface (same hand lever length and hand lever force). The disadvantage is the smaller distance between the cutting edges closer to the swivel joint, so that less thick material can be cut (unchanged opening angle between the hand levers).

The typical construction involves the use of the machine element gate and sliding block , an example of element expansion of the swivel joint. The two cutting edges continue to rotate around a point that is not materially occupied. Instead of being equipped with a hole / bolt at this point, they have a circular groove on one part, in which a pin (the second part) slides in a circle around the virtual joint center point. There are two axially parallel such enlarged joints on the side cutters. As a result of this symmetrical doubling, the tenons can be made shorter and the cutting forces are not axially offset (jamming is avoided), as if only such an eccentric pairing were used.

Power side cutter can also mean a side cutter that is equipped with a second pair of levers like a bolt cutter .
