Backdrop and backdrop stone
The backdrop and the sliding block together form a technical sliding joint . In contrast to the straight sliding joint, the sliding track (the backdrop) is curved. The sliding in the mostly circular sliding link block performs a rotation of a last remote fictitious point, while the pivot point of a straight moving sliding block is located at infinity.
This machine element formed from a backdrop and a sliding block is known from the controls used in steam engines . It is named there, not because it wouldn't work without it, but because it created a particularly elegant construction. The alternative would have been two physically rotating but rather large components ( gear rods ).
A more recent application of this machine element is in so-called power cutters .
In transmission technology, this element is an example of element expansion .
It is named after tracks for moving stage scenery .
