Pivot point

In mechanics, a fixed point (fixed or fixed point) around which a solid body can rotate under the action of forces is referred to as a pivot point or pivot point . When viewing a body in a three-dimensional space, the direction of a rotational movement can be specified by an axis of rotation . By specifying a pivot point, the movement is restricted to rotations whose axes of rotation run through this point.

Particularly in anatomical joint theory , the pivot point is also referred to by the Greek term hypomochlion . The kneecap (patella) serves, for example, as a hypomochlion for the tendon of the quadriceps muscle ( Musculus quadriceps femoris ). Furthermore, the sesame bones in the hand (e.g. the pea bone ) and on the big toe serve as a fulcrum for the attachment tendons of muscles. In a broader sense, the pubic symphysis can be viewed as a hypomochlion. At birth , the child rotates around it in the birth canal and thus changes its direction. Likewise, the muscle attachment of the musculus rectus superior , the upper straight eye muscle , has the function of a hypomochlion in relation to the tendon of the musculus obliquus superior .

In the rotation of binary trees in the computer science an edge is tilted. One of the two end nodes of the edge fulcrum ( pivot called).

In mathematics there are pivots in several meanings, s. see the article Pivotelement .

In a figurative sense, the term "hinge point" is used when a personal, social, political or economic matter “always revolves around the same point”. In this context, the phrase “fulcrum” is common.
