Nhouy Abhay

Nhouy Abhay (born January 9, 1909 in Khong , Champasak Province , today: Laos ; † October 1, 1963 in Vientiane ) was a Laotian politician who was foreign minister between 1951 and 1954.

Life

Nhouy Abhay was during the Second World War (1941-1945) with Katāy Dōn Sasōrit and French support founder of the "movement for national renovation", which represented anti-Thai positions. In organizing young intellectuals, he received the help of Charles Rochet , the Vichy official for the school system. They composed a national anthem, saluted the flag of Laos and published their own magazine, the bilingual Lao Nyai . Between 1949 and 1950 he was Minister for Public Health in the first cabinet of Prime Minister Prince Boun Oum . In the first cabinet of Prime Minister Prince Souvanna Phouma , he took over the post of Foreign Minister from 1951 to 1954 and was also Minister of Information. He was also in this cabinet and in the subsequent cabinet of Prime Minister Katāy Dōn Sasōrit between 1951 and 1955 for the first time Minister of Education.

In the second cabinet of Prime Minister Prince Souvanna Phouma, he first held the offices of Interior Minister and Minister for Social Welfare between 1956 and 1957, and was then again Minister of Education after a cabinet reshuffle from 1957 to 1958. Most recently, he was Deputy Prime Minister and again Minister of Education in various governments between 1960 and 1962.

His older brother Kou Abhay was Prime Minister of Laos between January 7 and June 3, 1960.
