The power plant Gneisenau was right next to the Gneisenau Colliery in Derne located coal power plant , which had a 210-meter-high chimney. After the chimney of the Gustav Knepper power plant , it was the second tallest structure of its time in Dortmund. The chimney was built later.

With six megawatts , Gneisenau was one of the lowest- performing colliery power plants , which was designed for the combustion of coal dust.

The Gneisenau power plant was also shut down (1990) and partially demolished after the colliery was closed in 1985. The large chimney was dismantled in 1991. In February 2012 the remaining buildings were demolished. The demolition took place after complaints from the population, as burglaries, fires and devastation repeatedly took place on the disused site.
