history

The baroque church was built by Jesuits in 1646 and was planned as a Jesuit college . The church is dedicated to the feast of the Exaltation of the Cross . The construction was financed by the Drugeth family . After the Jesuit order was banned in 1773, the Empress of Austria, Maria Theresa , gave the church to the Greek Catholic Christians . In 1799 an iconostasis was added to match the baroque church . During the Soviet era the church was given to the Orthodox Church . The adjacent bishop's residence was used as a technical school and fell into disrepair over time. It was not until 1991 that the church and residence returned to the ownership of the Ruthenian Greek Catholic Church. In 2003 the relics of the Blessed Martyr Bishop Theodore Romscha were transferred to the cathedral.
