history

The year the chapel was built is not known. A document from 1638 mentions a donation from Count Adolf von Nesselrode from 1622 in favor of the chapel. Around 1760 the chapel was used for masses on Sundays and public holidays. The chapel fell into disrepair after a few decades. During the French Revolutionary Wars , first Austrian imperial, and later French soldiers used the chapel as a storage room and lounge. The roof, windows and doors were destroyed. Later a steward had the floor dug up to under the altar, as he suspected treasures in the chapel; however, his search was unsuccessful.

In 1815 Count Franz von Nesselrode came into the possession of Ehreshoven. In the course of the restoration of Ehreshoven Castle , he also had the chapel restored. It was inaugurated on August 4, 1816. A crucifixion image was placed on the altar.

After the construction of the nearby dam, which was completed in 1932, the chapel fell into disrepair and was looted by vandals and partially destroyed. The responsible monastery administration tried a renovation in the 1960s, but stopped efforts after the chapel was destroyed again.

Citizens of the district and the monastery administration renovated the chapel again at the beginning of the 21st century. In addition to maintaining the levies, the outer walls were grouted, the foundations drained and the roof repaired. Windows, doors and floors were renewed. The chapel was reopened on May 8, 2006.
