Kreuzkapelle Wettingen

The Kreuzkapelle in Wettingen is a chapel built in 1660 at the intersection of the road to Otelfingen and Würenlos . Today it is right on the eastern edge of the village.

history

The Kreuzkapelle was built at the crossroads at the junction of the former country roads towards Otelfingen and Würenlos. According to a document from 1655, there was already a "Heilig Chreutz-Hüsli" before the chapel was built. Since the Zelge there was already called Kreuzzelg, a wayside cross must have been there before this first chapel was built. The construction of the Kreuzkapelle was under the care of the abbot of the monastery at the time and it can be found on the Gyger map from 1667.

The chapel

The Kreuzkapelle was restored in 2006. As a result of archaeological and monument conservation studies, it was restored to the state it was in around 1890. The chapel had already been extensively renovated in 1826 and 1827, and renovation work also took place in 1880. For some time the chapel was equipped with two bells, today only one is left. It was the larger of the two, weighs 120 kg and is dated 1796. Nothing is known about the whereabouts of the smaller bell.

Inscription above the portal

The following inscription can be found above the entrance portal of the chapel:
