The Kreuzkirche in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm is the main church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish of Pfaffenhofen. In addition to the Kreuzkirche, the parish also has a second church building of its own, the Resurrection Church in Wolnzach , which serves as a church and community center for the northern district.

After a Protestant received citizenship in Pfaffenhofen for the first time in 1802 , the Protestant community grew steadily. In 1827 there were already 25 and in 1900 there were 67 Protestants. In 1897 Christian Unger founded the "Evangelical Diaspora Pfaffenhofen, Mainburg and Surroundings". The new branch parish , which initially belonged to the parish vicariate of Kemmoden and then to the Ingolstadt parish of St. Matthew, held its services in the small, later in the large hall of the town hall. The first of these services took place on March 21, 1897. As a result, there were around two to three services a year.

In 1898 a prayer room fund was established. The starting capital of 50 marks grew to 710 marks by 1903; In 1907 it was 2,100 marks and in 1911 finally 11,600 marks. After the city had rejected the association's request for a free building site in 1908, it announced in 1913 that the desired building site on Münchener / Moosburger Strasse for the planned new church could now be purchased. The poor house stood on this property; 50 years earlier the place of execution was still nearby. On August 20, 1913, the general assembly approved the purchase and the 960 m 2 building plot was acquired for 5,400 marks. Because of the First World War , however, the construction of the church was delayed and the subsequent inflation devoured the entire building capital. During the war years of 1914/18, church services were also held regularly.

Construction after the First World War

Due to these circumstances, construction of the church according to plans by the architect Karl Brendel could not begin until May 14, 1925; the foundation stone was laid on June 21, 1925. The topping-out ceremony was celebrated on July 25, 1925. In autumn 1925 the roof and the tower were covered; the construction work was stopped because there was no more money. However, after further grants, construction could continue. On June 29, 1926, the church was consecrated by district dean Baum. However, the painting of the church did not begin until 1928.

Renovations after World War II

In 1954 the ringing was completed by two more bells. In 1959 a small organ could be purchased, which was replaced in 1995 by a new, larger organ. Necessary interior renovations were carried out in the post-war years. In March 2014 a two-month interior renovation was due, it was financed entirely through donations. In 2016 there was a necessary exterior renovation, associated with the construction of a ramp for people with disabilities.
