Kreuzkloster Gotha
The Monastery of the Holy Cross (Latin monasterium Sancti Crucis ) was a monastery of the Cistercians in Gotha in Thuringia from 1216/51 to 1524.
location
The monastery was first located in the city at Sundhäuser Tor on Jüdenstraße , (around the later Augustinian Church ). In 1255 the nuns moved in front of the city walls at Brühler Tor (today between Eisenacher and Bohnstedtstraße). Nothing is left of this system.
history
The monastery was probably founded around 1216 (or 1251?). In 1251 it was moved to the city gates. 1258 Augustinian hermits came to the previous location .
In 1519 the facilities were badly damaged by fire, and in 1524 the monastery was closed.
Further development
The buildings that had been transferred to the city were demolished by 1542 and replaced by the “Alter Gottesacker” cemetery . The St. Katharinenkirche (garrison church) built there in 1656 was also demolished in the late 19th century.
Today there is a school and the public swimming pool in this area.
