Cross stone from Killeen
The cross stone of Killeen (named after the townland of the same name, Irish Na Cillíní , but also called Baile Mhic Íre Cross Slab ) is a cross stone in the Killeen neighboring townland Ballymakeery ( Baile Mhic Íre ) east of Baile Bhuirne in County Cork in Ireland . It is located in a small circular stone enclosure and is accessible from the Ballymakeery Post Office.
The small menhir ( English standing stone ) is decorated with geometric crosses on the two flat broad sides . It is uncommon to have scores on both sides, and above a cross there is a small, hard-to-see score. The style dates it to the early Christian period, probably the 5th to 8th centuries.
The purpose of its placement in this area of the land is unknown. The menhir stands on the same medieval road as the menhirs of Ballymakeery Bridge and the Ogham stones of Shanacloon , about a kilometer away, across the Sullane River and the N22 .
The stone circles of Gortanacra and Gortnatubbrid are also nearby .
