The stone circle of Gortanacra is located in the eponymous townland ( Irish Gort an Acra ) south of Baile Bhuirne in County Cork in Ireland .

The multiple stone circle of Cork and Kerry Series (by Seán Ó Nuallain also Axial Stone Circle - axial stone circle - called) has a diameter of 8.4 m. It is a good example of a stone circle of this type. It originally had 13 boulder-type stones, none of which are more than 0.9 m high. There are 12 stones preserved, five of which are on the ground.

Mark

Multiple stone circles are symmetrically arranged so that the so-called "axial or lying stone" is directly opposite two stones, which are usually the highest in the circle and mark an entrance ( Bohonagh stone circle ). It is typical, but not continuous, that the height of the stones in the circle is reduced in the direction of the axial stone, which is constantly in the south-western sector of the monument. The axial stone of Gortanacra is the only noticeably rectangular stone.

Nearby is the Gortnatubbrid stone circle .
