Way of the Cross on the Rodenberg

The Way of the Cross on the Rodenberg is a listed processional way on the Rodenberg in Menden (Sauerland) in the Märkisches Kreis ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

History and architecture

The processional route was laid out by the city from 1684/85 with originally seven stations. The destination is the Holy Cross Chapel . From the original features are combined scenic wooden reliefs with rough figures, partly obtained before architectural backdrops. The reliefs in the newer wayside shrines are partly classical, they date from the beginning of the 19th century. To the north of the Kreuzkapelle there is a wooden pavilion for the penitential cross donated in 1685; it is marked 1705. The way of the cross was extended mainly in the 18th and 19th centuries in terms of ascent and descent, crosses and chapels. Twelve wayside shrines from the period from 1865 to 1866 stand by the Kreuzkapelle, the reliefs are the work of Chr. Mosecker.
