Prince Ferdinand von Solms-Hohensolms-Lich wears the badge of honor around 1918.
The warrior honor in Eisen was donated on March 13, 1917 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen on the occasion of his 25th anniversary in office. The badge of honor has been awarded about 2,000 times to proven Hessian fighters. The recipients should have previously received the Iron Cross and the Hessian Medal for Bravery and were wounded at the front. That is why the award was given the nickname "Bloody Ludwig".
It was made from various materials such as blackened iron, tombac , zinc, silver, silver-plated iron, and colored copper.
One of the most famous bearers of this award was the German fighter pilot Julius Buckler .
