The war memorial

The Bergheim war memorial is a 4.50 meter high memorial made of shell limestone on Kirchstrasse in the district town of Bergheim in the Rhein-Erft district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

Description and construction history

The war memorial on the Erft was inaugurated in 1872. The base shows a laurel wreath , the symbol of fame, victory and immortality. The narrower middle section gives the names of 113 fallen soldiers in the German War of 1866 and the Franco-German War of 1870/71 , sorted according to the mayor's offices of the Bergheim (Erft) district . The corners of this monument are decorated with four torches pointing downwards as symbols of extinct life. The upper part of the memorial is an obelisk , a symbol of virtue and steadfastness. The names of victorious battles of both wars are given in four small plates. The top of the obelisk is a bronze eagle on a helmet wreathed with laurel .

The lettering in the laurel wreath on the east side bears the slogan : "With God for King and Fatherland", which is reflected on the opposite page: "God was with us, be the glory to him". On the west side is the dedication : "His members of the Bergheim district who fell in 1866, 1870/71".

Up to the end of the Second World War , two French loot cannons from the Franco-German War stood next to the war memorial. For several years now, memorial plaques have been placed on both sides of the war memorial to commemorate the victims of the National Socialist tyranny as well as of flight and displacement.
