The inscription names 2080 fallen sons of the city in the First and 3000 in the Second World War

The war memorial in the city of Heilbronn was created between 1929 and 1936, when the ground level area of the historic port market tower was redesigned as a memorial for the fallen soldiers of the First World War based on a design by the architect Paul Bonatz . After the Second World War , the memorial was expanded to include the memory of those who fell in 1939–1945. The sculptors Erwin Scheerer , Wilhelm Schäffer and Karl Dübbers created a bas-relief for the tympanum of the Gothic portal.

Individual monuments

The tower contains various memorial plaques, relief sculptures and inscriptions for the Heilbronn soldiers who died in the First and Second World Wars. In addition to the inscription 1914–1918–2080 Sons of the City died for Germany , a total of 2082 names are listed on blackboards in the memorial, including those of 27 Jewish soldiers who were removed in the Third Reich and replaced with the names of slaughterhouses. In 1945 the corresponding names were reinserted. Inside the archway, an inscription refers to the 2080 and 3000 sons of the city who died in the First and Second World Wars.

A relief sculpture by Wilhelm Schäffer with two soldier figures from 1929 commemorates the dead of the 1st Battalion of Reserve Infantry Regiment No. 121. The plaque was originally attached to the Friedenskirche , was re- consecrated in 1957 at the Nikolaikirche and later moved to the harbor market tower.

A coat of arms-shaped plaque commemorates the dead of the Landsturm Infantry Battalion Heilbronn. A relief on the north wall of the tower commemorates the missing of the 215th Infantry Division . The dead of the Second World War are commemorated on another commemorative plaque for the I. Department of Artillery Regiment 71, Infantry Regiment 34 and Fortress Pioneer Staff 10. This board also names some of the locations of the departments mentioned.

In May 1985, to the right of the exit from the tower to the Hafenmarktpassage, a memorial was erected for those displaced during the Second World War. There is also a memorial for the reconstruction in front of the harbor market tower.
