The figure is under monument protection and is entered in the monument register of the state of Saxony-Anhalt .

description

The names, place of death and date of the fallen are engraved in the base of the monument. Originally there was a dagger on the right side of the lion's back, but it was broken off in 1939. This should symbolize the stab in the back legend . The construction was funded by the Union of Frontline Soldiers , among others . The lion's gaze towards France was also interpreted as an indication of questioning the outcome of the war. Therefore the place is not used for memorial events. Another memorial to the fallen is on the city's historic market square.
