The war memorial was donated by King Wilhelm von Württemberg on January 1, 1840 as a commemorative token of the services faithfully rendered to the king and fatherland and could be awarded to all persons who participated in one of the campaigns of 1793, 1794, 1795, 1796, 1799, 1800, 1805, 1806, 1807, 1809, 1812, 1813 (mainly the so-called coalition and liberation wars ).

The bronze medal shows a W (Wilhelm) with a crown and laurel wreath . On the reverse a shield carried by two crossed swords with the inscription For loyal service in (number of) campaigns .

The award was worn on a black and red striped ribbon on the left chest.
