Helensburgh war memorial

The war memorial in Hermitage Park is located in the Scottish city of Helensburgh . The park is on Victoria Road in the city center. In 1993 the monument was included in the Scottish Monument Lists in the highest category A. The monument protection explicitly extends to the surrounding wall and the decorated entrance gate.

history

The park was on the grounds of Hermitage House . The land was sold to the city of Helensburgh for £ 3750 with the condition that a park be established there. After the Heritage House housed an emergency hospital during the First World War, it was finally demolished in 1963. However, the park and the surrounding wall were retained. The architect Alexander Nisbet Paterson , who lived in his Longcroft estate in Helensburgh and had already designed various villas in the city, was commissioned to plan the war memorial . The structure was finally completed in 1923. In 2010 the war memorial was added to the Scottish register of endangered listed buildings. In particular, the condition of the surrounding wall is classified as poor. The restoration costs are around £ 30,000.

description
