The War Memorial in the Scottish town of Renton in the Council Area of West Dunbartonshire is on the school grounds next to the Smollett Monument on Main Street . In 1996 the structure was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in Category B.

history

In the First World War, many soldiers fought from Renton as part of the British troops. For this reason it was decided to erect a war memorial in the city. A planning committee was formed under the chairmanship of the Conservative House of Commons Alexander Wylie . It was planned to raise donations of £ 1,000 for the establishment; in the end, however, only £ 700 could be raised in the economically weak post-war years. The London stonemasons Body & Dempster were entrusted with the design of the monument. The stone comes from a quarry in Fife . The monument was ceremonially unveiled in 1922 in the presence of the stonemason. A field south of Renton was chosen as the location. Only later was it moved to its current location next to the Smollett Monument. The bronze memorial plaque in the base, which listed the names of all the dead from Renton and their unit, was stolen in the 1980s and replaced by an engraving in the stone.

description

The memorial is on Main Street to the left of the Smollet Monument in front of Renton School. It is an approximately 8.5 m high obelisk with a square floor plan. The names of the fallen soldiers are engraved in the foundation.
