Smollett Monument
The Smollett Monument is a memorial in the Scottish town of Renton in West Dunbartonshire . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.
description
The building is on Main Street in the center of Renton across from the western bank of the Leven . It was commissioned in 1774 by his cousin Jane Smollett in memory of the poet Tobias Smollett, who died in 1771 . The monument consists of a free-standing Tuscan column that rests on a foundation with a square floor plan. The column ends with an urn-shaped detail on a dome-shaped base. A large, rectangular plaque with a Latin inscription is embedded in the foundation. The text is by Samuel Johnson , George Stuart and John Ramsay .
