history

Hall

The ring was originally built by the Russians in the 1880s as a warehouse for guns. The building was built according to the drawings by the architect Greifons. Greifon also made the drawings for the beach barracks in Suomenlinna. The ring was built of brick and the walls were plastered. The original floor was replaced with a new concrete floor in 1908. In addition to the large hall, there are also two smaller vestibules next to the two entrances. There were stoves in these vestibules that were later moved to the great hall. As a result, new chimneys had to be built.

The Russians used the ring mainly as a warehouse. Later, the hall was used, among other things, as a gymnastics room for the soldiers of the garrisons. At the beginning of the 1890s, a space was also built for the orchestra and the stage, including dressing rooms for both women and men. Even if the ring was suitable for many purposes, there were never horses in the hall, despite the designation as a ring.

After Finland became independent in 1917, Suomenlinna also became part of Finland. Soon after the outbreak of the Finnish Civil War , Suomenlinna served as a prisoner-of-war camp for the soldiers of the Red Guard. At that time, however, the manege only served as a storage room and workshop. After that, the hall served both as a cinema theater and as a storage room for the Navy. During the Finnish Continuation War , basketball was also played in the hall. The war museum put the hall into use in 1974.

After the War Museum received permission from the State Council to restart exhibition activities, the Suomenlinna Manege was chosen as the exhibition hall. The thorough renovation took place in 1986–1987. During the renovation, among other things, the floor was completely repaired and the heating stoves were removed.

Today's exhibition in the Manege "From Autonomy to Operation Atalanta", which was opened in 2012, presents the history and development of the Finnish Army from 1809 to the present day. There have also been special exhibitions in the Manege, such as Exhibition on the Vesikko submarine in 2011 and the exhibition on Finnish war invalids in 2015.

The exhibition “From Autonomy to Operation Atalanta” is located in the exhibition hall of the Manege. The exhibition consists of a showcase for military uniforms , heavy weapons and multilingual panels about the history of Finland. The information texts in the exhibition are written in Finnish as well as in English, Swedish and Russian. There is also a section in the exhibition where you can try on uniforms from different decades.

Among the heavy combat equipment there are objects from the 500-year-old cannons to the material from Operation Atalanta , for example a Somali pirate boat . Other objects worth mentioning include an 8.8 cm anti-aircraft gun , also known as the eight-eight, a field stove that was pulled by horses, a Vickers 6-ton armored car and newer equipment such as B. an SS-N-2 Styx anti-ship guided missile and an ATV .

A noteworthy object in the exhibition is a torpedo tube that sank twice with a torpedo boat . Originally, the torpedo tube was in a torpedo boat Bditelnyih of the Russian Empire that hit a mine in November 1917. The torpedo tube was then lifted out of the sea and installed in a Finnish torpedo boat S2, which also sank in a storm near Reposaari in October 1925. The torpedo tube was lifted the next year. It became part of the collection of the Finnish War Museum in 1930.
