High-rise in demolition

The Krupp high-rise Geisweid was the first high-rise in Siegen and was located in the Siegen district of Geisweid . It was built in the mid-1950s by the then economically successful company Stahlwerke Südwestfalen AG as a representative administrative building and moved into on January 27, 1957. The 14-storey high-rise was planned by the Siegen architects Köhne and Reichert and was considered a good example of post-war building development, which is why it was later placed under monument protection.

From the mid-1970s, the steel works in South Westphalia were taken over by Friedrich Krupp AG in the wake of the steel crisis at the time . As the importance of the plant in the group of companies declined and the number of employees decreased, less office space was required, so that the building was gradually used less and less from the end of the 1990s. It had been empty since June 2003.

Another reason for giving up the building was that after almost 50 years it no longer met today's safety requirements, especially with regard to fire protection . An expensive renovation would have been necessary for further use, which is why the owner of the property and building, ThyssenKrupp Real Estate GmbH, submitted an application to the Arnsberg district government to lift the monument protection and demolish the building and this - after some back and forth and after an on-site meeting of all those involved - also approved by the then building minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Oliver Wittke . The demolition took place in November 2009.

Parts of the building's furnishings were then used elsewhere. For example, the boiler was handed over to the Geisweid Association for the Promotion of Swimming Pool, which intends to use it as part of the modernization of the Geisweid outdoor pool. The relief lookout by the artist Hermann Kuhmichel , which was housed in the foyer of the building until it was demolished, is now in the Geisweid town hall.
