Kudahuvadhoo ( Dhivehi : ކުޑަހުވަދޫ ) is a Maldivian island . It is the main island of the South Nilandhe Atoll .

The island is located at the southern end of the South Nilandhe Atoll, which is identical to the administrative atoll of Dhaalu . Kudahuvadhoo is 181 km from the Maldivian capital Malé and 113 km from the nearest airport, Kadhdhoo Airport on the Laamu Atoll .

Kudahuvadhoo is 1,040 m long and up to 880 m wide, the total area is 0.69 km², while the reef , in which there are three other uninhabited islands, is 56.01 km². In 2006 there were 1639 people on the island.

history

Kudahuvadhoo Mosque

Norwegian adventurer Thor Heyerdahl visited the island in the early 1980s . Above all, he admired the island's old mosque, the stonework of which he described as one of the most beautiful he had ever seen. Kudahuvadhoo was affected by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and the subsequent tsunami, but the damage was minor.

In March 2014, the island attracted worldwide attention after residents reported seeing the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 .
