The cow gate

The Kuhtor (Polish Brama Krowia) is located in Gdansk on the banks of the Motława River.

history

The cow gate was built in the fourteenth century in the Gothic style. Originally the cow gate only had a rather narrow passage. Later, a passage for passers-by was broken. The cow gate connects the Hundegasse (Polish ul. Ogarna ) with the cow bridge (Polish Most Krowi ). It owes its name to the fact that cows were driven through the gate to the slaughterhouse on Speicherinsel .

When the wooden cow bridge was replaced by an iron drawbridge in 1901/02, the cow gate was thoroughly rebuilt, it was given a wide passage and two wide passages. The appearance was changed according to the taste of the time. The gate was renamed the New Cow Gate.

The gate was largely destroyed in 1945. During the reconstruction, the original Gothic appearance was restored, whereby the preserved Gothic walls were integrated into the new masonry. The gate houses the Polish Tourist and Regional Studies Association.
