The Speicherinsel ( Polish Wyspa Spichrzów ) is an island in Gdansk , created in 1576 after the excavation of the canal bed of the New Motława (Nowa Motława). The island is located in the city center to the east of the Rechtstadt and is surrounded by the waters of the Motława and the New Motława.
Since the 13th century there have been numerous granaries on the site of today's granary island, in the 16th century their number increased to three hundred. The Blue Lamb is now the only ancient Danziger memory intact preserved components.
The Speicherinsel suffered severe damage during the war in 1945. The milk jug gate , which was built between 1517 and 1519, is one of the few remaining architectural monuments . In the middle of the island, a housing estate was built along Milchkannenstrasse with old-style houses.
The construction projects currently being completed include the rebuilding of the northern part of the island. The Deo Gloria warehouse and ruins were integrated into the modern design. The new buildings also include hotels.
Pedestrian bridge to the Speicherinsel
A pedestrian bridge (Kładka św. Ducha) to the Long Bridge is to connect the northern part of the island to the touristically important right town with its sights. During the construction work on May 6, 2019, part of the Long Bridge collapsed in the area of the Holy Spirit Gate. The repairs delayed the completion of the swing bridge . This was moved to its warehouse in August 2019 and opened to the public on two Christmas days on a trial basis. The building is scheduled to open in April 2020. It is 50 meters long, 4.5 meters wide and the rotating part weighs 150 tons.
