ECTACO Inc. (East-Coast Trading American Company Incorporated) is an American developer and manufacturer of hardware and software products for speech recognition , translation and e-books.

voice recognition

ECTACO is one of the first developers of speech recognition in the field of translation. The speech recognition technologies developed by ECTACO in collaboration with Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency are used by international organizations such as NATO , the UN and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), agencies in the USA such as the United States Army , FBI , the United States Department of Homeland Security States , Social Security Administration , United States Secret Service , Department of Health Services, United States Postal Service , New York Hospitals. The cooperation with the US authorities was particularly active in 2004–2006. ECTACO devices were also used in the Iraq war .

The speech recognition system developed by ECTACO allowed US government institutions to communicate with non-English speakers, especially in conflict areas. The immediate translation of the corresponding answer made communication easier. These transfers were independent of individual pronunciation peculiarities. Competitors in the segment did not currently offer these options.

E-book reader

The Ectaco Jetbook is a color e-book reader with a 9.7 "eink display (1600 × 1200 pixels) from Triton .

founding

The company ECTACO Inc. was founded in autumn 1989 in New York, USA, by David Lubaynitsky, born in Saint Petersburg (Russia). At that time the company acted primarily as a dealer of electronic dictionaries from other manufacturers. In 1990 ECTACO started developing its own software and hardware. Russian- and Polish-speaking immigrants in the US were selected as the company's target audience. The first electronic dictionaries from ECTACO supported the language pairing Russian ↔ English and Polish ↔ English and later also German ↔ English.

Development centers

In 1998 ECTACO's software development center was founded in Saint-Petersburg, Russia, with Anton Epifanov, vice president of the company, as managing director. The center developed software for approximately 300 models with support for 47 languages ​​and began developing speech recognition technologies in 2000 . In 2002 the first commercial model with speech recognition from ECTACO appeared on the market. In cooperation with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency in 2003, the company built a multilingual device with ASR (Advanced Speech Recognition).

ECTACO's hardware development center is located in Hong Kong, China.

Worldwide presence

ECTACO's main office is located in Long Island City , NY. In 1993 ECTACO opened agencies in Russia (Saint-Petersburg and Moscow). Within two years, offices were opened in Germany (Berlin), Great Britain (London), the Czech Republic (Prague), Canada (Toronto), Poland (Warsaw) and Ukraine (Kiev). In 2000, a second US office was opened in Chicago.
