Triton is the name of a Greek sea god, see Triton (mythology) . Further meanings are:

ancient geography:

  • Triton (Boeotia) , river in Boeotia
  • Triton (Crete) , river in Crete
  • Triton (Propontis) , a place on the Propontis, near today's Armutlu on the Marmara Sea in the Yalova province in Turkey
  • Triton Promontorium , a promontory in the Propontis
  • In ancient written sources designation of a river as well as a lake and swamp area (see Triton Lake , also called Tritonis Lacus or Tritonis Palus ) in North Africa (or in ancient Libya, which meant North Africa apart from Egypt).

Biology:

  • Triton Linnaeus, 1758. A genus of snails (with the species Triton littoreus ). The name is described according to the zoological nomenclature "valid" (nomenclature "available"), but is no longer used because its assignment is unclear (a noun dubium ).
  • Triton Montfort, 1810. A genus of snails, today Charonia Gistel, 1847 ( Triton horns ) (younger homonym of Triton Linnaeus, 1758).
  • Triton Laurenti, 1768. A genus of amphibians, today Triturus Rafinesque, 1815. (younger homonym of Triton Linnaeus, 1758).
