Kujō Kanezane

Kujō Kanezane ( Japanese 九 条 兼 実 ; * 1149 ; † 1207 ), also Fujiwara no Kanezane ( 藤原 兼 実 ), is the founder of the Japanese Kujō family at the suggestion of Minamoto no Yoritomo . Some sources also give Fujiwara no Morosuke (908-960) as the founder of the clan.

Kanezane organized the compilation of the Kitano Tenjin Engi , the illustrated story of the Kitano Shrine . At the age of 38 he became regent ( Kampaku ) for Emperor Go-Toba and in 1189 Grand Chancellor ( Daijō Daijin ). His diary has come down under the title "Jewels [equal] leaves" ( 玉 葉 , gyokuyō ).

He was the father of Kujō Yoshitsune , who like him became regent and grand chancellor, but died in 1206.
