The Culture Point West (formerly Community House West City ) is an urban and cultural venue in the district of Braunschweig Weststadt . The regular events at the Kulturpunkt in Ludwig-Winter-Straße 4 include the Braunschweiger Bucherbasar and the Jazzfrühschoppen. The hall of the Kulturpunkt offers space for up to 120 people. In addition to the range of events, the Kulturpunkt also offers rooms for clubs, groups and private events.

history

The half of the building in which the community center is located is part of the Ludwig-Winter-Straße 2-4 building complex, which was designed by the Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius in the 1920s. The modern building was built for Broitzem Airport and Broitzem Barracks and housed an officers' mess.

In 1981 the city of Braunschweig rented the state-owned property Ludwig-Winter-Strasse 2 and 4. In 1983, the department of social affairs at the Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel University of Applied Sciences was established in the half of the building at number 2, which the city sublet to the state of Lower Saxony . In 1982, the first youth center in Weststadt (later the children's and teen club) was opened in the building at number 4. On February 22, 1983 the youth center was named Jugendzentrum Weiße Rose in memory of the Munich resistance group Weisse Rose and the executed students Hans and Sophie Scholl.

On February 21, 1988, the Weststadt community center (GHW for short) finally opened in the same half of the building after the casino building had been completely renovated. A delegation from the GDR twin city Magdeburg was also present at the celebrations.

On August 24, 2008, the community center celebrated its 20th anniversary with a summer party. On August 8, 2010, the 50th anniversary of the Weststadt district was celebrated with a summer party.

With the end of the lease between the city and the federal government on April 30, 2011, the future of the city's facilities was not certain. The federal government, which had no need for the building itself and was no longer interested in subletting it, planned to sell the property. The University of Social Sciences had already left the building in 2010 and was relocated to Wolfenbüttel. In December 2010, the property and half of the building were acquired by the city of Braunschweig.

In 2012 the community center was renamed “Kulturpunkt West”.

The White Rose children's and teen club is currently located in the basement below the Kulturpunkt. As part of the "Campus Donauviertel" project, this is to move into a new building on the same property, which means that the rooms in the basement will be available for use by the Kulturpunkt in the future and the space available at the Kulturpunkt can be increased.
