The Globe cultural site is a planned replacement venue for the Coburg State Theater for the period of several years of renovation and renovation work on the historic Great House. It will consist of a round theater and three outbuildings and be used as a multifunctional building for cultural and educational events. The opening of the building on the site of the former Coburg freight yard is scheduled for autumn 2022.

history

A general renovation of the main building of the Coburg State Theater has been sought since the beginning of the 2010s. The Angersporthalle was planned as an alternative venue in 2016, but it had to be converted for an estimated 7 million euros. As an alternative, the Coburg University of Applied Sciences proposed a temporary alternative venue in modular, lightweight wood construction on the Schlossplatz , which should be easy to dismantle. The design was to take the form of a round venue based on the London Globe Theater , based on a design idea by architecture students Isabell Stengel and Anders Macht.

Originally, the Free State of Bavaria had promised 75 percent funding for the interim venue, which had to be demolished after the renovation work was completed. At the beginning of 2018, this was converted into a grant of ten million euros for a permanent replacement building. That was the financial basis for a temporary venue in the form of the Globe Theater at the southern end on the site of the former freight yard on the Itz . The project was supported with grants of one million euros each from the three largest Coburg companies Brose Fahrzeugteile , HUK Coburg and Kaeser Kompressoren . At the beginning of 2017 they founded the company Globe Coburg GmbH, which commissioned the design and approval planning for the interim theater. Globe GmbH donated the planning permission to the city of Coburg as part of the building application on June 6, 2019. The city tendered the implementation plans and construction work on the basis of these documents.

In mid-2018, Globe Coburg GmbH commissioned the Weitramsdorf architect Karl-Heinz Glodschei with the design planning of the rotunda, which should enable drama, dance and music theater . For the functional rooms (offices, artists' dressing rooms, rehearsal rooms) of the State Theater, three rectangular, two-story outbuildings are also planned.

The costs including the outdoor facilities were estimated at 23.9 million euros at the end of 2018. The Globe Theater should be completed in summer 2021. At the end of 2019 it was announced that completion would be Template: future / in 2 yearspostponed to September 2022 , which made it necessary to renew the operating license for the main building, and costs of 30 million euros are expected, of which 10 million euros will be borne by the Free State of Bavaria. Construction should start in July 2020.

On May 28, 2020, the newly elected city council unanimously passed the fundamental resolution to hold on to the realization of the Globe Theater with three ancillary buildings at the former freight yard. For the Globe Theater itself, costs of 24.175 million euros are estimated. The outdoor facilities are calculated at 3.57 million euros, the “effect lighting” at 366,000 euros, the “experience of the Itz” at 1.5 million euros, the ancillary construction costs at 3.95 million euros, the municipal building department's own contribution at 250,000 euros.

The plans include a four-story, round structure. The wooden structure is 18 meters high and 36 meters in diameter. In addition, a massive basement is planned. The stage space with its three levels offers around 400 to 600 seats, depending on the use. The seats on the ground floor can be removed to gain more space in the parquet. A retractable orchestra pit and a revolving stage are also planned. The stage building and the three outbuildings have a striking wooden facade with vertical slats. Around 300 tons of spruce wood are required for the rotunda. Parts of the floor slabs are designed as glulam- concrete composite elements. The shell and the inner walls of the Globe and its three outbuildings are to be made of glued laminated timber.
