history

Belvedereschlössl, Stockerau, spring 2015

The Belvedereschlössl probably dates from the 15th century. From the 17th century the property can be traced; it was owned by Count Andreas von Volkra, and from 1672 by Count Palffy. Johann Conrad Albrecht von Albrechtsburg acquired the Volkra-Hof and its accessories in Stockerau in 1682. He had the building rebuilt by 1688, including the later Belvedereschlössl, and in 1690 obtained the new name Freisegg (Freysegg) for the small manor. Belvedere was used as a pleasure palace and sold to the Stockerau market in 1780.

In 1882 the Weipert machine factory was built in the garden of the Belvedereschlössl and demolished again in 1933. After that, the area was partially built, but in 1984 it was redesigned as a baroque garden. Extensive revitalization measures began in 1984 under Mayor Leopold Richentzky.

In 1985 the Belvedereschlössl cultural center was opened. The collections of the Stockerau Museum, which had been housed in the town hall since 1910 and later in the church school, could thus be transferred to the new premises.
