Cummerbund
The cummerbund is a sash (waist band ) worn by men .
history
British soldiers probably brought sash fashion from India to Europe at the time of British colonial rule : because of the tropical climate, officers' vests under their jackets were too warm. As a substitute, they adopted the Indian custom of wearing a belly band made of noble fabrics, the so-called camar band . The Persian kamarband (= "hip belt") became phonetically the English word cummerbund (also cumberbund ), which is still in use today . From there it was linguistically a small step to the German word "Kummerbund", which has nothing to do with the meaning of Kummer .
The new fashion first made its way from India to England , where the waist band in three to four horizontal folds has been an alternative to the waistcoat in evening wear since 1893 . From around 1930 the cummerbund for tuxedos became more and more popular in the rest of Europe.
Fashion
The cummerbund instead of a tuxedo vest is only worn with a single-breasted tuxedo jacket. Traditionally, the color and design are coordinated with the bow and the pocket square. The classic tuxedo cummerbund and bow are black - hence the English name black tie for the tuxedo. The cummerbund is worn around the waist, concealing the waistband. In the back it can be adjusted using a wide elastic band and closed with a metal buckle or mother-of-pearl buttons.
A small pocket was hidden between the folds of the Indian sashes; therefore you wear the cummerbund so that the folds on the outside point upwards. In this way, the generally hidden ticket pocket (for tickets, money or the like) remains accessible.
