Kuno warrior

Kuno Krieger (born October 2, 1930 ; † May 15, 2005 in Herdecke ) was a German entrepreneur and orchid breeder .

Kuno Krieger grew up as the son of Josefa and Karl Krieger, first in Beverungen an der Weser, and later in Dortmund. Kuno Krieger first came into contact with orchids in the 1950s. Together with his wife Thea Krieger, he visited relatives in the Weserbergland. They ran a café and had a flower window inside their premises decorated with orchids. That was very unusual for the time. Kuno Krieger was immediately fascinated by this plant genus.

On his first visit, he bought some of these plants and first tended them on the window sill at home. However, it soon turned out that there was not enough space and that the plants in the living space did not find the optimal conditions for their development. Kuno Krieger was a trained radio and television technician and at that time ran a television and electronics shop in Dortmund with his wife. Technically interested, he tried to improve the growing conditions for his plants, initially with a closed flower window. Soon the desire arose for a greenhouse, but he could not find a suitable design.

He got in touch with the Erbslöh company, a renowned aluminum company from Wuppertal. There he found an open ear and constructed his first greenhouse in his garage at home. The execution met with great enthusiasm from befriended hobby gardeners. In 1961 the first greenhouse was sold, in 1970 the electronics shop was sold and Kuno Krieger dedicated himself exclusively to the production of high quality hobby greenhouses. These soon found their followers not only among orchid friends. The business is continued today by his daughters.

In addition to building greenhouses, Kuno Krieger continued to work intensively on orchids and other horticultural topics. Numerous trips to England and the contact with experts expanded his specialist knowledge. He was able to contribute this in numerous lectures, publications and as a judge.
