Plastic look

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under plastic optics is understood in the optics using lenses and other optical components made of transparent plastics . Advantages of the plastic optics are the lower weight and the unbreakability, the disadvantages are the usually lower image quality, the lower risk of scratching and a certain amount of shrinkage when exposed to the sun for a long time.

Plastic optics finds z. B. Use in glasses , contact lenses and optics for cameras in the lower price range.

Compared to conventional optics , a product made of plastic optics is only worthwhile for larger quantities. The price is only cheaper than with conventional optics if the number of pieces exceeds several thousand. This and the low image quality ensure that plastic optics are not used in high-resolution devices such as telescopes, expensive cameras or similar areas of application.

The production of optical components and systems from plastic offers a number of advantages:

  • cost-efficient series production
  • constant replication of the highest optical quality
  • Design freedom (complex shapes and geometries are possible)
  • Integration of assembly functions and devices in one component
  • low part weight
  • Refinement through optical coating
  • higher breaking strength
