The Kuon-ji ( Japanese. 久遠 寺 ) is a Buddhist temple on Mount Minobu ( 身 延 山 ) in the city of Minobu ( Minamikoma County ) in the Japanese prefecture of Yamanashi . It is the main temple of the Nichiren-shū , the oldest of the schools of Nichiren Buddhism that go back to the Buddhist reformer Nichiren .

The five-story pagoda ( gojū-no-tō ) of the Kuon-ji

At the invitation of the Nichiren supporter and land manager Nambu Sanenaga ( 南部 六郎 実 長 ) Nichiren came to Mount Minobu and founded a hermitage there in June of 1274 with his help. Nichiren spent the first few months here with only a small group of selected students. But as early as 1278, 60 followers had temporarily gathered in the then still small dwelling. On November 21, 1281 Nichiren left his quarters to found a temple not far from it, which he called Minobusan Kuon-ji.

The tomb of Nichirens, in which his ashes are kept according to his last will, is also located on today's temple grounds.

On May 10, 2018, 18 buildings of the temple complex were added to the list of material cultural assets of Japan .
