Kupferschmiedestrasse (Lübeck)
The Kupferschmiedestraße is a street of Lübeck .
location
The 110 meter long Kupferschmiedestraße is located in the northwestern part of the old town island, in the Marien-Magdalenen quarter . It begins at the Fischergrube opposite the confluence of the Schwönekenquerstraße , runs southwards and ends at the Beckergrube opposite the confluence of the Fünfhausen .
history
The street 1386 with the Low German name Copperslegerstrate ( Kupferschlägerstraße ) is mentioned for the first time in a document , after the local craftsmen. The name persisted with variations in the following centuries:
- 1380: Koppersleger Dwerstrate (Kupferschläger-Querstraße)
- 1445: Koppertwerstrate (Kupferquerstraße)
- 1446: Platea fabrorum cupri ( lat. , Kupferschmiedestraße)
- 1556: Koppersmede Dwerstrate (Kupferschmiede-Querstraße)
In the late 16th century the name underwent a change; the specific name after the coppersmiths was forgotten:
- 1588: Smededwerstrate (Schmiede-Querstraße)
- 1608: Smedestrate
- 1695: Kleine Schmiedestrasse (as opposed to Schmiedestrasse )
In 1852, Kleine Schmiedestraße was officially set as the street name, but in 1884 it was changed to the name that is still valid today in a recourse to the original name.
The historical buildings on the eastern side of the street were destroyed in the bombing raid of 1942 ; on the west side, however, houses from the late 18th and early 19th centuries still exist.
