Kuria District

Kuria District was a district in Nyanza Province in Kenya . The district capital was Kehancha . Until 1993 the area belonged to the Migori District . In the southeast the district bordered on Tanzania . Kuria District was divided into five divisions, Kehanancha, Masaba, Kegonga, Mabera and Ntimaru and formed an electoral district. Many members of the ethnic group of the same name lived in the Kuria District .

As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Migori County .

economy

The people of the Kuria District made a living from farming and fishing in Lake Victoria . Mainly coffee , corn , tobacco and sugar cane were grown. Livestock farming focused on cattle.

education

In 2005 the Kuria District had 164 primary schools and 17 secondary schools .

Healthcare

The district had one hospital and eight health centers. There were almost 57,000 patients for every doctor. Mainly malaria , respiratory infections and diarrheal diseases were treated. The HIV - prevalence was 13%. Infant mortality in 2000 was 9.4%, and 12.7% of children died before their 5th birthday. In the Kuria District, female genital cutting continued to take place in November and December despite the official ban . The Kenyan women's association Maendeleo Ya Wanawake assumed that up to 200 girls were circumcised every day. Since June 2000, the German Society for Technical Cooperation in the Kuria District has been working on site with District Health Management to implement the action plan for the abolition of female circumcision.
