history

18th century

The Electorate of Mainz, Philipp Wilhelm von Boineburg, wanted to revive trade and the economy in Erfurt after over 60% of Erfurt's inhabitants had died of the plague in the 1680s.

In 1704 a commercial deputation was established for this purpose. It granted concessions and privileges to those manufacturers who wanted to start a new business.

In the period from 1705 to 1711 was on the Anger of the Electoral Mainz Libra and Packhof built. With the commissioning, the previous scales and the warehouses in Waagegasse were given up. From 1712, all goods that were delivered to Erfurt were to be outsourced and customs cleared here.

With this institution, Boineburg succeeded in allowing trading activities in Erfurt to flourish again at the beginning of the 18th century .

19th century

In 1883, the Erfurt city council set up a “commission for the storage of Nerly pictures” and commissioned them to search for suitable rooms for a museum.

The search dragged on until the summer of 1884, when the commission was able to report that in the former Kurmainzische Waage- und Packhof, in which the then main tax office resided, on the first floor “the northeastern part accessible from Bahnhofstraße ... for purposes a municipal museum [would] be usable on a rental basis ”. After another year, the lease was signed on July 1, 1885 and construction work for the renovation of the storey began.

With the opening of the museum on June 27, 1886, the slow transition from the former Erfurt scale to the municipal museum began.
