Kurmanjan Datka (* 1811 ; † February 1, 1907 ) is a Kyrgyz national heroine who is revered for her wisdom and courage. She was the ruler of the Alai areas in southern Kyrgyzstan and is therefore also called Queen of South Kyrgyzstan .

Life

Kurmanjan was the daughter of a nomadic family in Alay Mountains born. As was customary at the time, her parents selected a future husband for her, whom she was to marry at the age of 18. Kurmanjan broke with this tradition and fled from her husband. On her escape, she wrote a letter to the local ruler Alimbek Datka , who welcomed her and finally married in 1832. During their marriage, Kurmanjan Datka was already influencing her husband's government work. He was murdered in 1862 and Kurmanjan took over his position. In the following years she succeeded in asserting her territory in the Alai against external enemies, so that she is regarded as a courageous ruler. During this time she was also given the title Datka (translated: general, just leader).

Russian annexation

Kurmanjan became famous for her role during the gradual annexation of what is now Kyrgyzstan by the Russian Empire in the 1860s and 1870s. Kurmanjan used her authority to prevent her people from a hopeless fight against the Russian occupiers. This is now seen as a wise and diplomatic act that has prevented great suffering and destruction. After a Russian general captured her son and sentenced him to death for the murder of Russian soldiers, she refused all attempts to free her son, fearing damage to her country. This behavior is seen today as a symbol of the willingness to make sacrifices for the development of Kyrgyzstan.

After she withdrew from public life, Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim visited her in 1906. A well-known photo was taken showing Mannerheim and Kurmanjan. Kurmanjan died in 1907.
