Kurunegala ( Sinhala : කුරුණෑගල) is the capital of the Northwest Province of Sri Lanka and the Kurunegala District . The city has a train station and several main roads that connect it with other major cities. Kurunegala is 94 km from Colombo and 42 km from Kandy and has a population of about 28,000.

The Buddhism is widespread in Kurunegala most. In addition to Buddhism, the city is home to many other religions, such as Hinduism , Islam and Christianity . Well-known Buddhist temples in Kurunegala are the Athkanda Raja Maha Viharaya, the Bauddhaloka Viharaya, the Angangala Cave Temple and the Wilbawa Purana Viharaya. Hindu temples, mosques and churches are also found in abundance.
