Kyoto Tower

The Kyōto Tower ( Japanese 京都 タ ワ ー , Kyōto tawā ) is a 131 meter high observation tower in Kyōto , Japan. A viewing platform at a height of 100 meters offers a 360 ° panoramic view of the city.

The Kyoto Tower was completed in December 1964 and is located directly opposite the main train station in the city center. The building was designed by the architect Mamoru Yamada, who was advised by the engineer Makoto Tanahashi from Kyoto University . The latter was also responsible for the planning of the supporting structure made of stacked and clad steel rings. In contrast to the Eiffel Tower or the Tokyo Tower , no openly visible steel framework was used, as such a construction method was viewed as not being elegant enough for the historic city of Kyoto . The cost was ¥ 380 million .

The shape, which is often compared to a spaceship and also has some resemblance to a lighthouse , was supposedly inspired by a Buddhist candle. A nine-story building 30.8 m high, which houses a hotel and several shops, serves as the base of the tower. The “Sky Lounge” restaurant with three floors is located on top. The tower itself has a weight of about 800 tons. When the weather is clear, it is possible to see as far as Osaka .
