The Kystjegerkommandoen ( German coastal hunter command) is an amphibious special unit of the Norwegian Navy . Their main tasks include littoral warfare , i.e. operations near the shore, commando operations and asymmetrical warfare . The Kystjegers correspond to the marine infantry.

In the late 1990s there was a restructuring of the coastal defense in the Norwegian military. The elimination of large parts of the fortress systems and coastal artillery made it necessary to set up a military unit capable of protecting the Norwegian coastal areas. Therefore, in 2001, the formation of the Kystjegerkommando began. During the deployment phase, the coastal hunters trained with units from the Norwegian ( Marinejegerkommandoen ) and American, German and Dutch combat swimmers. The Kystjegerkommandoen officially announced its readiness for action on August 17, 2005. Since then, the troop has mainly specialized in missions in the spectrum of intelligence gathering and reconnaissance.

Operations

In the fall of 2007, parts of Kystjegerkommandoen took next to German and Latvian forces in the Operation Harekate Yolo in the province of Faryab in Afghanistan in part. They carried the bulk of the fighting against the increasingly powerful Taliban .

In November 2007, Norwegian coastal hunters accompanied units of the Afghan National Army and their American advisors in the province of Badghis during a combat operation and protected the Afghans from an ambush by the Taliban by means of reconnaissance . For this they received the Army Commendation Medal from the US Department of Defense.
