As noise vehicles are in Austria in accordance with § 8b paragraph 1 KDV (fi V. g. G. M., Paragraph 4) all motor vehicles h with a maximum design speed exceeding 50 km / and a maximum gross vehicle weight of more than 3.5 t, in which

1. the sound level of the driving noise and the engine braking noise
a) with an engine power of less than 150  kW does not exceed 78  dB (A)
b) does not exceed 80 dB (A) with an engine power of more than 150 kW
2. the highest value of the sound level of the compressed air noise does not exceed 72 dB (A).

According to Section 8b (5) of the KDV, vehicles that meet these requirements must be marked next to the front license plate with a circular green plate with a diameter of at least 20 cm, a white border and the Latin letter L in permanently legible and indelible white letters. The board must be designed according to the model in Appendix 5c to the KDV. The board with a diameter of 15 cm is also permitted. In these versions, the dimensions of the letter L, in deviation from Appendix 5c, are 85 mm high, 55 mm wide and 12 mm thick.

The purpose of these markings is to make vehicles with special rights (relief when driving on certain streets or districts, exceptions to the Sunday and public holiday driving ban , tax relief, etc.) easy to recognize visually, whereby they serve in particular to facilitate border controls or traffic surveillance.

There have been regulations on low-noise trucks in Austria since 1989; since 1996, the associated limit values must also be complied with by all newly registered trucks in the European Union . Trucks with an “L” sign are exempt from the truck driving ban (between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. - see StVO ). Since the requirements for the "L-Schild" are higher than the German regulations, the corresponding German marking ("G-Schild") is not recognized in Austria.
