Léon Herbo

Léon Herbo (born October 8, 1850 in Templeuve-en-Pévèle , † June 19, 1907 in Ixelles / Elsene ) was a Belgian portrait and genre painter as well as an orientalist and art critic.

He first attended the Académie des beaux-arts de Tournai, where he studied with Léonce Legendre (1831-1893), and continued his studies from 1869 to 1873 at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles.

In 1873 he was the first to be admitted to the preparatory competition for the Prix de Rome and then traveled through France, Germany, Holland and Italy. He then settled in Brussels, where he exhibited for the first time in 1875.

In 1876 he became a founding member of the "L'Essor" group, a group of realists.

Between 1879 and 1905 he exhibited regularly in Brussels and Ghent, but also in the salons of the Société des Artistes Français in Paris. He also exhibited in Munich and Berlin.

He also dealt with the painting of orientalism, was also active as an art critic.
